What Are Home Adaptations?

Home adaptations are changes or additions to your home that help you live more safely and independently if you have an illness, disability, or reduced mobility.

Types of Adaptations

Minor Adaptations:

  • Small changes usually costing under £250, such as grab rails, lever taps, or adjusted sockets.

These are normally arranged by us and usually do not require an Occupational Therapist assessment.

Major Adaptations:

  • Larger changes such as stair lifts, wet rooms or ramps.

These usually require an Occupational Therapist assessment and are funded by the local council through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG).

We may need to seek permission from the property owner in some cases and your housing officer will support with this.

How to Request an Adaptation:

Contact us to explain your needs. We will help guide you through the process, including referrals to Adult Social Care where needed.

Working With Social Workers & Occupational Therapists:

They assess your needs, recommend adaptations, and help with funding applications. We can help you make contact if you do not already have support.

Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG):

A DFG is council funding for essential major adaptations. Approval depends on assessment, funding, and property suitability.

When Adaptations May Not Be Possible:

If a property is unsuitable, costs are too high, or alternative housing would better meet your needs. We will explain clearly and support you with options.

Maintenance & Safety:

Either we, or local authority, will arrange servicing and maintenance for major adaptations such as stair lifts.
